The Victoria memorial hall in kolkata was built to honor the British rule in India. The idea of the Victoria memorial was envisaged by lord Curzon. The architectural plan of the Victoria memorial hall was laid down by renowned architect sir William Emerson. Victoria memorial is the perfect blend between the mughal and the British architecture. Victoria memorial hall today is a museum that consists of a collection of Victoria memorabilia, paintings during the British rule and other artifacts of historic importance. As the night descends on kolkata, Victoria memorial hall is illuminated by various lights which gives it a look of a palace in fairy tales.
Belur math is in the northern part of the city. It is uniquely built to look like various religious shrines from different angles. The belur math looks like a temple, mosque and church from different angles. Belur math is a fair representation of the tolerance of Indian culture towards every religion. Belur math is headquarters of the world renowned organization Ramakrishna mission. Belur math was a tribute by swami Vivekananda who brought about a socio-cultural revolution in India to his guru Sri Ramakrishna.
The st’ Paul’s cathedral was founded in the year 1839. It was mostly because of the efforts put by Bishop Wilson. It was declared as the first Episcopal church of the orient in 1847. The unique indo-gothic architecture of the st’ Paul’s cathedral can be owed to Major W.N. Forbes. In 1897 an earthquake demolished the 61m high tower. Later when it was resurrected, it was again destroyed by an earthquake. Finally it was again rebuilt as an imitation of the bell Harry tower of Canterbury cathedral.
Fort Williams is another major traveling destination of kolkata. It is the most impressive and enchanting of all the forts in east.
